Samhain is believed to be a time when the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest which allows for opportunities to communicate with ancestors and spirits but it was believed that not only could your benevolent sprits come through but evil ones as well hence the Samhain Fire which was lit to keep the malevolent spirits at bay. The fire or Balefire was accompanied by freshly harvested bundles of herbs such as rosemary, sage, thyme etc being burned in the fires or hung over thresholds and above hearths for protection.
